"Don't climb those monkey bars. You'll surely fall off"
"That's hot. Move away before you get burnt"
"Too sharp for you. Let me do it."
I helicoptered because I didn't trust them. Not in a malicious way but in the sense of not trusting their judgement, knowledge, decision making and skills.
It was not my intention to stifle them but now we find ourselves blessed with a third child who is confident, sure of his skills and secure in our trust we realise the stark contrast he presents to his older brothers.
Where they are apprehensive, fearful and require much confidence building and coaxing to try a new skill he is eager and confident whilst still appreciating the need to act safely.
He regularly uses sharp knives to prepare food for himself and the family, scissors to craft with, climbs the highest in the playground, assists with hot cooking and is first in line to pick up a beetle/lizard/snake etc.
Witnessing the joy he has in experiencing life in a free, trusting environment brings me so much joy. Seeing him pass this onto his brothers, who now will use the small sharp knives and operate the microwave, reminds me we are never too old to learn and never too young to be the teacher.
