My baby

My baby is not talking.

For months now we have pushed aside our fears and tried to convince ourselves he is just slower than his brothers. That there is nothing wrong. That we can get by with babysign and the handful of recognisible words he has.

I have become painfully aware of the "normal" language development of his peers and realised things are not getting better.

What we are doing: (which is exactly what we did with his brothers) the reading, the constant conversations and verbal labelling of everything he points at; is just a bandaid.

He is exceptional.

He can follow more complex instructions than his older brother, he brings us loads of joy, he melts away a work day full of stress when he runs to meet his dad at the door, he is the bravest of the three, he somehow manages to get exactly what he wants without words, he is our little nudie bum.

He is so much more than his voice.

But my heart aches and there is a lump sitting somewhere between my throat and my tummy.

How can we know all of the wonderful thoughts in his tiny head without his voice? What if there is something wrong?

What if he is only exceptional in our eyes?

Hey, Adem did not talk until he was over 2, I also was worried until I realised what was going on. My children were talking for him. Test this theory out before getting too worried.

EG. Pointing at something he wants and grunting or making a non-word sound. Do NOT say "Oh you want a drink?" Which more than likely will be answered with a nod. Ask him..."What do you want?" instead.

Prompt him to use his own language. It won't take long and you will be able to tell if it is an actual problem or its just easy for him if you are all talking for him.

Oh babe. He is exceptional and so are you. A friend of mine had the same thing going on with her 3rd babe. Her non verbal communication was so good there was no real need.
